Who needs to go to Bali for a perfect summer beach day? In the rural area of Gunungkidul, a 2 hour ride from Jogja is all you need to find yourself along this beautiful coastline of Drini Beach.
I went there with a bunch of my friends from my faculty. It’s not to only enjoy the only good weather we’ve been getting over the past week, but a chance for all of us to bond. And thanks to nature, we sure did. Splashing in the water and eating juicy watermelons, it was quite hard to get over the post-beach blues.
Now I know, living in Indonesia, it’s pretty much summer all year round. But it’s nothing like a good beach trip to finally remind you that the real summer holiday has officially started.
The sun was high up in the sky, it lit up the white sand and gave us luscious turquoise waters. We were surrounded by gorgeous cliffs with evergreen trees, and in the distance, a coral island or reef stood lonely yet beautifully in the vast ocean. The beach gets its name from the belief that there are numerous santigi trees or drini as its called by the locals.
It has a small island or reef in the middle which divides the beach into two parts. One part is where the excitement happens. Where the waves crash fantastically into the reefs standing with dignity, sending mist into the air that’s just always amazing to see. On the other side, it’s where you would feel so much peace and time will sure pass by quickly as you just want to sit there and gaze into the waters. This place is a charming lagoon where you can bask yourself in salt water, surrounded by tall coral islands with the blue sky above you and a limitless view in front of you. I swear, I must have sat there for a good twenty minutes just feeling endless peace where words are not needed.
Behind you, you will find reed-roofed gazebos where you can enjoy drinking some coconut water to quench your thirst. Oh and another note, you can climb to the top of the island to enjoy a whole view of Drini. Don’t worry, the stairs are made of sturdy wood and bamboo on one of the islands. On the island that divides two parts of the beach, the steps are made by nature itself. After some mini trekking to the top, you will be grazed with the cool ocean breeze and God’s amazing creation.
That trip to Drini alone made me relish on thr fact that you don’t have to get the summer fun you need at a waterpark or a spa. Nature has given us the best and made me shiver to know that God has no limits and creates the ultimatr beauty.
It was a good day, a beautiful beach, surrounded by great company. Summer has started, get your shorts and sunnies on, and happy exploring!
