One Sunday morning, that’s unexpectedly busier than usual, found us scrambling for a breakfast spot. And, I was in dire need of my weekend dose of coffee. It was until we found Baconerie, quaintly located down in Benda street of Kemang, South Jakarta that will have you grabbing that menu once again and see what else that they could possibly put on our plates. Should your morning be a drab, Baconerie will throw your fusses out the window.
As you scan the menu, it’s difficult to not get the sense of how specific they are with the selection of thought-out and fulfilling choices for a happy stomach. And specific, is a promising factor of consistency that I will always praise whenever I go for a meal. Anywho. From an all-day breakfast menu, burgers, sandwiches and even a list of scrumptious taco choices, you will find that most of them do not stray away from the essence of what they call their establishment.
Being a sweet-tooth, I always seek the comfort that either pancakes or waffles present; preferably smothered in any kind of gooey sauce from chocolate, toffee and caramel. There was a hint of worry at first, but then my eyes went wide when I saw the printed words of both familiar and creative inventions of pancakes in their menu. So, we selected a banana pancake with caramelized bananas and candied bacon pancake, accompanied by hot americano and cappuccino since I was in the mood for something stronger. When taking a bite, I closed my eyes at how perfectly cooked the pancakes were with an equal balance of fluff and that slightly burnt taste at the back of your mouth. And talking about freshness, you would likely imagine that the dough was just made earlier on. As more people rolled in and ordered a variety of dishes, a repeated choice was the Baconerie Platter. It consisted of soulful classics such as eggs, sausage, bacon, mushroom and crisp toasts that didn’t look like they were lifelessly placed on the plate unlike what other establishments did upon previous visits. There’s a certain level of both simplicity and finesse that undeniably will keep me longing to come back.
Since it’s placed among a row of shophouses, Baconerie is a relatively small place. But no worries, they still provide a space upstairs that is perfect for a hearty breakfast or lunch with the big family. The open kitchen is right downstairs, as well as a pastry bar should you crave any scones, cinnamon rolls, pretzels and even cookies! The chocolate chip one that I tried was so groundbreaking because of how crispy it was around the edges and unbelievably tender in the middle. So much that you could feel the love and passion invested in baking them. And despite its cozy space, the murmurs of a lively Sunday morning wasn’t all that disturbing. But of course, there are those who seem to love the sound of their own voices but hey, I’m not going to get down to that.
So, let’s move on to one point I’ve been dying to get out of my chest. There are numerous establishments in Jakarta that will profess their expertise, and guarantee of a good ol’ cup of coffee to you. And most of the time, it’s true. However, similiarly, whatever food that they serve are quite subpar to the extent that there should be no need for them to serve any. That sounded a little bit catty and picky, but I feel like there is no harm in wanting equally delicious treats or meals to accompany our coffee. Right? (Here’s where I secretly pray that no one rolled their eyes at that statement). And Baconerie, my friends, is definitely not on that list. My cappuccino gave me the kick I wanted and the lack of latte, or in this case, cappuccino art didn’t even matter. All I wanted were more, and more sips. So, kudos to you, Baconerie for making us feel right at home.
